Wong's students stage brief protest

PETALING JAYA (May 7, 2009) : About 20 students and alumni of the Monash University where detained activist Wong Chin Huat teaches held a brief protest in a show of solidarity over the arrest of their lecturer today.

The group calling themselves Students of Chin-Huat Against Regression gathered outside their university entrance at about 12.30pm where they condemned Wong's arrest and called for his release.

"He stood by democracy and freedom of speech for his love and respect for the country. He always taught us to stand up for justice and the truth. We just do not see what wrong he has done to be detained." said former student Lim Zhen Hui who headed the group.

About 40 police personnel who came prepared to face a large crowd were relieved to find the group was only made up of a small number.

The police gave the group 10 minutes to have their say and disperse, an order which the students adhered to obediently.
Meanwhile, the three political activists arrested opposite the Prime Minister's Department in Putrajaya for not obstructing the police from carrying out their duties were released yesterday.
The three men were among a group led by PKR supreme council member Badrul Hisham who had tried to handover a cake to the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak in conjunction with Mongolian model Altantuya Shaaribuu's birthday early on Wednesday.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief SAC II Datuk Ku Chin Wah confirmed the men had been released on bail.
